Mark gave a great answer. I am just going to add this because I feel that it is important.

You do not need to be a moderator in order to help people. We like it when people help others. It doesn't matter if you are a staff member or you aren't. This is about having fun and if you are able to make sure someone is enjoying their time on the game even though you are not a moderator, you should not hold back.
