How about interaction with the environment?

One thing I've learned through the few years I've been drawing and such is that, animation in your background makes a huge difference, it adds much more for the eye to see and enjoy. If you ever watch a film look closely at the background, many times there will be clouds moving, a plane flying ect... if the image is static then it's a boring sight. My suggestion is have an animated gif or something over your current world object (Ex.The waterfall). I think this would help the game out a lot.

I agree with this. It would not be too hard to achieve... moving water in the fountain and waterfall, some waves at the beach, and some moving clouds would all enhance the game

you should make the lava flow out of the volcano as well that would be awesome
